Posted @withrepost • @therealcocktailbart Might look like we’re doing a Scotch Tasting today, but nay – we’re tasting Tequila. The wonderful @tequila_kontor (who has one of the finest and biggest selections of tequila, mezcal and other mexican spirits in germany) was so kind to send us a tasting box of @storywoodtequila – a brand that has lots of fun ageing tequila in unusual Barrels. Let’s dive in:
Speyside 7 Reposado
Aged 7 months in Speyside whisky casks. Smells mild, but clearly like tequila, a bit more wood notes than usual for a reposado, vanilla, cooked agave. Mild at the palate, with a certain chilli spiciness and a hint of Poblano chile and smoked paprika. Lots of wood and a touch of caramel.
Speyside 14 Anejo
Aged 14 months in Speyside whisky casks. Toasted wood, again a bit of smoked paprika, lemon balm and thyme, cooked agave. Even milder on the palate than the Reposado, a bit of ginger tickles, a bit of yellow-floral aftertaste. Vanilla and caramel are there, the aftertaste ist clearly woody, almonds in the finish.
Speyside 7 Reposado 53%
Aged 7 months in Speyside whisky casks, bottled at cask strength. Smells rather sweet, woody, caramel, toffee, vanilla. a bit of chocolate. On the palate much broader, nice bitter and herbal notes, a bit heavy, vanilla, with Brazil nut touches, finish with notes of creme brulee.
Sherry 7 Reposado
Aged 7 months in an Oloroso sherry casks, bottled at cask strength. I wouldn't have recognised it as tequila in a blind tasting. Dark chocolate, red fruits, wood. Vanilla and only very late a bit of cooked agave. Creamy mouthfeel, noticeable sherry, crazy chilli heat, but zero alcoholic burn. Lots of red fruit, reminiscent of rum pot, great spice. Natural, unobtrusive sweetness. Lots of wood and plum in the finish. Veeery nice.
Double Oak Anejo
Aged 14 months in Oloroso sherry and Speyside whisky casks, bottled at cask strength. Warm honey, agave, wood, plums, red fruits, a bit of cinnamon. On the palate something bitter, earthy, forest floor, mineral, mushrooms. It lasts forever, with lots of spice, red fruits, again lots of plum and agave. Crazy Agave Adventure.
